About outside ashi submission techniques
Outside ashi garami positions your legs on the outside of your opponent's trapped leg. This gives you access to outside heel hooks, straight ankle locks, and transitions to deeper entanglements like inside sankaku.
The outside heel hook from this position attacks the knee by rotating the heel outward. Control the foot and knee line before applying pressure. The outside angle makes it harder for your opponent to kick free compared to inside positions.
Straight ankle locks from outside ashi are effective at all belt levels. Pinch their foot in your armpit, bridge your hips into their ankle, and extend. When the ankle lock is defended, use the reaction to transition to inside sankaku for the heel hook.
