About Standup
Every BJJ match starts on your feet. The standup phase is where you establish grips, fight for inside position, and look for takedowns or guard pulls. Strong standup skills give you the power to choose where the fight goes.
Most white belts rush through standup to get to the ground. That is a mistake. Learning basic takedowns and takedown defense builds confidence and keeps you safe in training and competition. You do not need to be a wrestler. A few reliable entries and setups go a long way.
Focus on posture, grip fighting, and 2-3 takedowns you can hit from different angles. Pair them with guard pull options so you always have a backup plan.
