About Closed Guard
Closed guard is the foundation of bottom-game BJJ. Your legs lock around your opponent's torso, giving you control over their posture and movement. From here you can attack with sweeps, submissions, and transitions to other guards.
This is the first guard most beginners learn, and for good reason. It limits your opponent's options while giving you a wide range of attacks. Armbars, triangles, cross chokes, hip bumps, and scissor sweeps all live here.
Breaking your opponent's posture is the key to everything in closed guard. Once their head is down and hands are controlled, your attacks become much harder to defend. If they posture up, switch to sweeps or transition to open guard.
