About Open Guard

Open guard covers any bottom position where your legs are not closed around your opponent. You use your feet on their hips, biceps, or legs combined with sleeve and collar grips to control distance and create angles.

Open guard is more dynamic than closed guard. You have more movement options but less inherent control. The tradeoff is worth it because open guard lets you attack with a wider variety of sweeps and submissions.

The key to playing open guard well is staying connected. Always have at least two points of contact with your opponent. If they strip a grip, immediately replace it. Never let them pass without a fight for inside position.
