About open guard sweep techniques

Sweeping from open guard requires active feet and strong grip fighting. Unlike closed guard, you do not have a locked position to work from. Your sweeps rely on timing, angles, and using your opponent's movement against them.

Scissor sweeps, tripod sweeps, and sickle sweeps are foundational open guard reversals. Each one targets a different angle and works against different passing styles. The tripod sweep is especially effective against standing passers.

Keep at least two points of contact at all times. When your opponent steps or shifts their weight, that is your window. Open guard sweeps reward patience and sensitivity to your opponent's balance.
