About bottom mount escape techniques

Escaping mount is a survival skill you will use at every belt level. Your opponent has full control from the top and is threatening chokes and armbars. Your job is to protect your neck, create space, and get to a better position.

The trap and roll (upa) is your first option. Trap their arm and foot on one side, bridge explosively, and roll them over. This works best when your opponent is low and heavy. The elbow-knee escape works when they are more upright. Frame on their hips, shrimp to create space, and slip your knee inside to recover guard.

Combine both escapes into a chain. When the trap and roll fails, immediately switch to the elbow-knee escape. When the shrimp is blocked, re-bridge for the upa. Your opponent can only defend one escape at a time.
